The Center for Material Cycles and Waste Management Research of the National Institute for Environmental Studies has published a database on municipal solid waste (MSW) management in the Asia-Pacific Region (“DaMSAR”) to narrow the data-gap in the region in monitoring progress toward the MSW management target of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

1.Background

The Center for Material Cycles and Waste Management Research of the National Institute for Environmental Studies has compiled data on municipal solid waste related to the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Indicator 11.6.1*1, and published a database on municipal solid waste management in the Asia-Pacific Region (DaMSAR). The database is expected to narrow the data-gap in the developing countries in the region and help policymakers and practitioners in monitoring progress on improving MSW management.

2.About the database

The initial set of data has been extracted from the reports (published from 2011 to 2019) of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) projects which have been conducted in 18 countries*2 in the Asia-Pacific Region.

+ Proportion of municipal solid waste (MSW) collected
 + Total MSW generated
 + Total MSW collected
 + Population
+ Per capita generation rate of household waste
 + Composition of household waste
+ Commercial/institutional waste, waste from public spaces, etc.
+ Quantities managed in recovery facilities
+ Quantities managed in disposal facilities
 + Composition of disposed waste

For more information about the database, please see the following link.

We plan to expand the data and country/regional coverage and update the database in future.
