Class Kinetofragminophora: Subclass Gymnostomata: Order Haptorida: Family Tracheliidae (ref. ID; 2013)

[ref. ID; 2013]
Body shape elongate, worm-like, rounded in cross-section. Large (up to 1.3 mm long), sluggish and non-contractile. Apex bears 2 unciliated ridges between which lies a long slit. The parallel ridges extend a third of the length of the ventral surface where they join to surround the oral aperture. Trichocysts are abundant, concentrated beneath the ridges and extend past the oral region to the middle of the body. There is a single large terminal contractile vacuole and many supplementary vacuoles dispersed throughout the cell. Macronucleus fragmented (up to 2,700 pieces) with numerous micronuclei. Planktonic, feeding on ciliates, algae and bacteria. Jankowski (1973) erected the genus for the species Pseudoprorodon lieberkuhnii (Butschli, 1889) Kahl, 1930; Spathidium gigas Da Cunha, 1914 and Cranotheridium elongatum Penard, 1922.
