Cranotheridium

Cranotheridium Schewiakoff, 1892 (ref. ID; 2013) or 1893 (ref. ID; 3540)

Class Kinetofragminophora: Subclass Gymnostomata: Order Haptorida: Family Spathidiidae (ref. ID; 2013)

[ref. ID; 2013]
Body elongate, rounded in cross-section, posterior bluntly rounded. Anterior region of body characteristically terminates obliquely to the longitudinal body axis with a narrowed region behind the apex. Uniformly ciliated in parallel rows which meet anteriorly along the apical edge which may or may not bear an unciliated ridge. The oral aperture is rounded, apically situated and supported by trichites. Large terminal contractile vacuole with or without some small vacuoles on the ventral surface. Macronucleus either elongate, ribbon-like and twisted, or ovoid. Most easily confused with the genus Spathidium which has a slit-like oral aperture unsupported by trichites whereas Cranotheridium has a rounded, supported oral aperture.
