Colonial. Inverted bell-shaped zooids mounted upon non-contractile branching stalk. Peristome with large conspicuous lip bearing four to six ciliary rows. Stiller (1971) considers the presence of the large number of peristomial ciliary rows as being insufficient to erect it as a separate genus and considers it to be a homonym of Epistylis. Most easily confused with Epistylis which has only one or two turns in the peristomial ciliary rows. May also be mistaken for Opercularia and Orbopercularia which are without a lip to their peristomes.

Adoral zone turns 4-6 times; pellicle annulated; macronucleus horseshoe-shaped in the anterior part of the cell; a single contractile vacuole is located near the buccal cavity; specimens occurring in eutrophic brackish waters may show pellicular tubercles resembling those of Vorticella monilata; sessile; dichotomous non-contractile stalk; colonies may consist of about 40-50 individuals; telotrochs with a posterior ciliary girdles occur under suboptimal conditions of life.
