Colonial. Inverted bell-shaped zooids mounted upon a branched non-contractile stalk. The peristome lacks a lip and its rim may be scalloped. The macronucleus always rounded, never elongate or C-shaped, and usually located in a mid-lateral position in the body. Species are often epizooic. The genus is most easily confused with Opercularia from which it differs only by the shape of the macronucleus.
