The Global Carbon Project (GCP), an international research project, has released “Global Nitrous Oxide (N2O) Budget 2024,” a global N2O balance detailing all sources and sinks of N2O. In this report, we revealed that total global anthropogenic N2O emissions have increased by about 40% in the last 40 years (1980-2020), with agricultural activities being the most significant source of anthropogenic emissions. In recent years, atmospheric N2O concentrations have been increasing faster than expected, and based on this report, emission reductions should be promoted urgently and a global N2O balance monitoring network should be established.
A paper summarizing the results of this research will be published in the international journal Earth System Science Data (ESSD) on June 12, 2024.
