Japan’s National Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Fiscal Year 2014(Preliminary Figures)

The Ministry of the Environment and the National Institute for Environmental Studies have released Japan’s National Greenhouse Gas Emissions (preliminary figures) in fiscal year (FY) 2014.
Total emissions in FY2014 (preliminary figures) were 1,365 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents (Mt CO2 eq.), a 3.0% decrease compared to those of FY2013; a 2.2% decrease compared to FY2005; and a 7.5% increase compared to FY1990.
Note: Japan’s fiscal year is from April 1 to March 31.

Japan’s total greenhouse gas emissions in FY2014 were 1,365 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent (Mt CO2 eq.).

This is a decrease of 3.0% (43 Mt CO2 eq.) when compared to the FY2013 emissions (1,408 Mt CO2 eq.), mainly because of the decreased energy-related CO2 emissions due to lowered CO2 emissions from power generation, owing to decreased electricity consumption (due to energy conservation, etc.) and the improvement of carbon intensity in power generation (due to greater adoption of renewable energy and fuel conversion, etc.).

This is also a decrease of 2.2% (31 Mt CO2 eq.) when compared to the FY2005 emissions (1,396 Mt CO2 eq.), mainly due to the decreased energy-related CO2 emissions in industrial and transport sectors, despite the increase in hydrofluorocarbon emissions from refrigerants following their substitution in place of ozone-depleting substances.

* Emissions are estimated based on annual figures in various statistics; as for preliminary figures in FY2014, some annual figures in FY2013 were temporarily used in place of FY2014 figures that have yet to be released. Moreover, some estimation methodologies to provide more precise estimations of emissions are currently being considered. As such, the final figures to be released in April 2016 are likely to differ from the preliminary figures in the current summary. Removals by forest and other carbon sinks will also be estimated and announced in the final figures.
