The National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) is pleased to announce its annual Spring Open House, aimed at visitors of high school age and over to be held during Science and Technology Week, on April 18 (Saturday), 2015.

On the day of the Open House, visitors to the institute will have the opportunity to come face-to-face with NIES researchers, who will explain details of their cutting-edge research on such environmental issues as climate change and low carbon society. In addition, visitors can participate in a variety of interactive activities, which will include the chance to ride Segways and generate electricity using bicycles.

Bilingual guided tours of selected facilities will be available from 10:30 and 14:00. Reception for the tours will start at 10:00. Please complete registration for the tours at least 15 minutes before their start times and assemble at the main reception 5 minutes in advance of the tours. The tour will last approximately one hour.

*There is limited parking and visitors are strongly encouraged to come to the event by means of eco-friendly transport such as the Science and Technology Week Free Shuttle Bus, public transport, etc. rather than using their own cars.

From Tsukuba Express(TX) Tsukuba Station

Take exit A3 and board the bus for Hitachino-ushiku departing from Bus Stop 4, and get off at the National Institute for Environmental Studies (around 10 minutes)

From JR Hitachino-ushiku Station

East exit, Bus Stop 1, take either the bus departing for “Tsukuba Center” or “Tsukuba University Central” and get off at the National Institute for Environmental Studies (around 20 minutes)

There will be exhibits and panel displays attended by NIES researchers who can answer your questions on topics such as:

  • What the oceans and mountains can tell us about global warming effects
  • Temporal changes and leaching dynamics of metals from E-waste
  • HEALS (Health Effects of Alerts System) and prediction of health impacts
  • The year to think globally about the earth’s outermost surfaces: 2015, the International Year of Soils
  • Biology and ecosystems monitoring: from long term monitoring to the latest methodologies
  • Toxicity research using iPS cells
  • Observation of atmospheric aerosols and clouds using lasers

Segway
  • Test drive a Segway

    Complementary to an ongoing initiative being implemented in Tsukuba's Designated Robot Zone on transportation systems aimed at encouraging low carbon society, we offer you the chance to test ride a Segway (tickets available at reception; must be 16 years or older; postponed in case of rain).
  • Generate Electricity by Bicycle
  • Global warming soil experiment

    Timetable: 10:20-10:30, 11:10-11:30, 13:10-13:30, 14:40-15:00, 10 participants per experiment, first-come, first-served
  • What do you make of our mini electric rides?
  • Are you a carbon glutton? (200 participants will receive a souvenir bookmark)
