DESCRIPTION

The National Institute for Environmental Studies, with the cooperation of the Ministry of the Environment (Japan) and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (United Kingdom), held a side event at the Conference of the Parties to the Climate Change Convention (COP12) and the second meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (COP/MOP2). The event was entitled "Global Challenges Toward a Low-Carbon Society (LCS) Through Sustainable Development (SD)" on November 8 and it took place at Acacia Hall in the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) near the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON).

The side event opened with a speech from Dr. Ryutaro Yatsu, Councillor in the Minister's Secretariat at the Ministry of the Environment (Japan). The panelists then gave their presentations, followed by a question period. The discussion was so lively that it stretched past the allotted time, and we were concerned about cutting into the time for the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) event that followed. The room was able to hold 120 people, but at one point, people were unable to find seats and had to stand and watch.
