Transitella

Transitella Gellert, 1950 (ref. ID; 2014, 7512)

Class Polyhymenophora: Subclass Spirotricha: Order Heterotrichida: Suborder Heterotrichina (ref. ID; 2014)

[ref. ID; 2014]
Body outline reniform, rigid with deep longitudinal furrows; ventral surface slightly concave and dorsal surface convex. Cilia arise from furrows in tufts on the ventral surface. Dorsal surface ciliation consists of both tufts and single 'sensory' cilia with a bare patch just behind the AZM. The ciliature of the peristome consisting of a row of 16 membranelles on the left gently curving from dorsal to ventral surface. Two undulating membranes on the right although one may be difficult to observe in the living animal. The peristome without cilia but the right edge is supported by transverse fibres visible in fixed specimens. 2 contractile vacuoles. The macronucleus elongate and slightly curved. Single species genus.

Transitella has a somatic ciliature formed by ciliary tufts with 4-8 kinetosomes, placed in pairs and joined to each other by thin fibrilar strands (Fryd-Versavel & Tuffrau 1978) in a similar way to that found in the oligochaete parasite Plagiotoma. It shows also a slight dorsoventral differentiation: the dorsal side has the kinetosomes placed in pairs and only one of them has a bristle; however, the ventral infraciliature is similar to that of former hypotrichs such as Kahliella or Hypotrichidium. However, Transitella has other characteristics typical of heterotrichs, such as its stomatogenesis (parakinetic) and the pattern of the paroral formation which is formed by two single kineties. (ref.
