Mycterothrix

Mycterothrix Lauterborn, 1898 (ref. ID; 2013, 7706)

Class Kinetofragminophora: Subclass Vestibulifera: Order Trichostomatida (ref. ID; 2013)
Suborder Colpodina Foissner, 1978: Marynidae Poche, 1913 (ref. ID; 7706)

Synonym Trichorhynchus Balbiani (ref. ID; 1618)

[ref. ID; 2013]
Body ovoid with pointed ends, circular in cross-section. Body ciliation reduced to 4 concentric rings which encircle the body, and in addition there appear to be several rows of cilia above the vestibulum as in Trimyema. May inhabit gelatinous lorica. Contractile vacuole in apical region of body. Macronucleus rounded, located anteriorly. The diagnosis of the genus has changed considerably since that of Lauterborn (1898). The species described since that time have now been transferred to the genus Maryna and only Mycterothrix acuminata Gellert, 1955 has been retained even through it strongly resembles Trimyema. However, in view of the aberrant position of the contractile vacuole and the presence of 4 rather than 3 ciliary rings, we have not followed the suggestion of Jankowski (1962) and have not transferred it to the genus Trimyema.
