The 3rd National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) Picture Contest – What will you save 30 years from now?

The National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) is pleased to announce the 3rd NIES Picture Contest, for Junior-High School students nationwide. This contest, which is this year being held for the third time, aims to deepen the interest and understanding of the next generation in environmental issues, as they will determine the future of such issues as well as the future of environmental research.
The theme of the current contest is: "What will you save 30 years from now?". The submission deadline for entries is May 29 (postmark date). Selected entries will be displayed on the NIES homepage from July 8 (Tuesday), 2014, and all entrants will also receive a commemorative prize. In addition, the winning entries will be displayed during the National Institute for Environmental Studies Summer Open House, to be held on July 19 (Saturday), 2014.

1. Theme

What will you save 30 years from now?

We would like you to imagine a scene 30 years from now, and the most important things from your present life and environment you would like to see in that scene. In particular, we would like you to depict natural scenes, and scenes from daily life and society that you want to be able to continue to enjoy into the future.

3. Entry Specifications

Picture Size = L 54cm X H 38cm. The picture should be drawn laterally. Writing can be incorporated in the picture. (Please also include a description or explanation of the picture in less than 200 words)

  • Fill-in application form (see below) and attach it to the back of your picture (if you are entering as part of a school or other group please enter the contact details of the supervisor; if you are entering individually enter the contact details of your parent or guardian)
  • Entries are limited to original works which have not previously been presented
  • To avoid creasing or bending, send your entry in a boarded envelope
  • The copyright of the works entered into the competition will revert to the applicant. Entries will be returned to all applicants (in the case of entries as part of a school or other group, they will be returned to the supervisor)
  • Any personal information shared during the application process will only be used in relation to the current competition, and for no other purpose

"Outstanding" - Top Prize: 1 person; "Excellent" - Second Prize: 2 persons; Honorable Mention - eight persons; Commemorative Prize - all applicants. Separate prizes will be awarded to all the top places.

8. Posting of Prizewinning Entries

Prizewinning entries will be published on the homepage of the National Institute for Environmental Studies from July 8 (Tuesday), 2014 (prizewinners will be contacted directly in advance)

9. Exhibition of Entries

There will be an exhibition of the entries at the National Institute for Environmental Studies Summer Open House, to be held on July 19 (Saturday), 2014, and on the homepage of NIES.

10. Prize-giving Ceremony

A ceremony will be held during the National Institute for Environmental Studies Summer Open House on July 19 (Saturday), 2014.
