Steenstrupiella

Steenstrupiella Kofoid & Campbell, 1929

[ref. ID; 3597]
Lorica consisting of a flaring collar and an elongate bowl; oral aperture circular, entire, sometimes with double margins; aboral end rounded or convex conical; folds or striae generally present on the aboral region; wall usually separated in the anterior part of the lorica. (ref. ID; 3597)
Type species; Steenstrupiella steenstrupii (Claparede & Lachmann) Kofoid & Campbell (ref. ID; 3597)
  1. Steenstrupiella gracilis Jorgensen, 1924 (ref. ID; 4600) or (Jorgensen) Kofoid & Campbell (ref. ID; 3597, 4046) reported author and year? (ref. ID; 4464)
  2. Steenstrupiella intumescens (ref. ID; 3319)
  3. Steenstrupiella steenstrupii (Claparede & Lachmann, 1858) (ref. ID; 4600) or (Claparede & Lachmann) Kofoid & Campbell (ref. ID; 3597, 4046) reported author and year? (ref. ID; 4464)

Steenstrupiella gracilis Jorgensen, 1924 (ref. ID; 4600) or (Jorgensen) Kofoid & Campbell (ref. ID; 3597, 4046) reported author and year? (ref. ID; 4464)

Descriptions

Lorica elongate sac-shaped, 2.1-2.6 oral diameters in length; collar shallow dish-like, its basal diameter 0.55-0.60 of an oral diameter; bowl cylindrical with almost straight sides, roundly ending in the aboral region; wall translucent, separated in the upper one-third of the lorica. (ref. ID; 3597)
These loricae are narrow, hyaline, tubular, and rounded posteriorly. The thin anterior rim flares abruptly. (ref. ID; 4046)

Comments

The species differs from S. steenstrupii (Claparede & Lachmann) in the small and stouter lorica. (ref. ID; 3597)

Measurements

Length 65-85; oral diameter 30-35 um. (ref. ID; 3597)
The dimensions of the loricae are: length 57-87, width at rim 31.6+/-1.3, width below collar 16-20 um (n=13). (ref. ID; 4046)

Steenstrupiella steenstrupii (Claparede & Lachmann, 1858) (ref. ID; 4600) or (Claparede & Lachmann) Kofoid & Campbell (ref. ID; 3597, 4046) reported author and year? (ref. ID; 4464)

Descriptions

Lorica slender, 4-5 oral diameters in length, consisting of a funnel shaped collar and a tubular bowl; collar an inverted truncated conical cone of 90-110 degrees, its basal diameter 0.6 oral diameter; bowl subcylindrical, more or less tapering (3-5 degrees) to a slightly inflated aboral region without any ornamentation; aboral end rounded; wall thickest in the nuchal part where it is separated. (ref. ID; 3597)
The loricae are much longer than those of S. gracilis, which they resemble in shape. The narrowest dimension is the middle of the lorica. Hada (1938) reported that well developed folds were present aborally in Atlantic Ocean specimens and that Indo-Pacific specimens lacked such folds. (ref. ID; 4046)

Comments

The species differs from S. gracilis (Jorgensen) in being longer and slender. (ref. ID; 3597)

Measurements

Length 108-175; oral diameter 33-35 um. (ref. ID; 3597)
The dimensions of the lorica are: Length 176-198, width at rim 37+/-1.8, width below collar 21-23 um (n=6). (ref. ID; 4046)
