Body outline shape oval to elongate, usually with rounded posterior but one species with pointed posterior. Body rigid not contractile. Anterior region always truncated obliquely to major body axis, bearing an unciliated apical ridge which is narrow towards the ventral edge and widens (sometimes to form a beak-like structure) towards the dorsal edge. Oral aperture slit-like, borne on apical ridge, when trichocysts are present they line the complete apical ridge without warts. Body ciliation uniform with dorsal brush of bristles. Single ovoid macronucleus present. Single posterior contractile vacuole.
