Class Oligohymenophora: Subclass Hymenostomata: Order Scuticociliatida (ref. ID; 2014)

[ref. ID; 2014]
Small (30-60 um long) dorso-ventrally flattened ciliate with an oval outline. The oval oral aperture is somewhat displaced to the right body edge. There is an undulating membranelle projecting from out of the oral aperture; there are inconspicuous. Somatic ciliation in horseshoe kineties centered around the oral aperture rather like in Cinetochilum. A long caudal cilium always present. Contractile vacuole in posterior body third. Macronucleus spherical and centrally positioned.

Descriptions

Oval, and dorsoventrally flattened. Ciliature restricted to the ventral surface, with longitudinal ridges dominating the dorsal. Distinguished from Pseudoplatynematum Bock, 1952 by simple pellicular ridges. (ref. ID; 2316)

Measurements

Length 40 um. (ref. ID; 2316)

Platynematum sociale (Penard, 1922) (ref. ID; 4611) or (Penard) Kahl (ref. ID; 1219, 1618, 1629, 2245)

Synonym

Platynema sociale Penard (ref. ID; 1219); Uronema sociale Penard, 1922 (ref. ID; 4611)

Descriptions

Body ellipsoid, highly flattened, especially in the anterior part; ventral side concave; small buccal cavity located towards the right side, surrounded by horseshoe-shaped ciliary furrows; smooth and rather short ciliation, 1 predominant caudal cilium originating from a posterior groove; front margin indented by ciliary furrows; macronucleus spherical in posterior half of the body; contractile vacuole located in the right posterior part; plasma yellowish and granulated. (ref. ID; 1219)
Anterior half more flattened; ventral side concave; cytostome in the anterior third; yellowish and granulated; sapropelic in fresh and brackish water. (ref. ID; 1618)

Measurements

Length 30-50 um. (ref. ID; 1219, 1618)
