Orthotrochilia

Orthotrochilia Deroux, 1977 (ref. ID; 2013)

Class Kinetofragminophora: Subclass Hypostomata: Order Cyrtophorida: Suborder Dysteriina (ref. ID; 2013)

[ref. ID; 2013]
Body outline shape oval, dorsal surface strongly arched, ventral surface flattened. There is a posterior cytoplasmic spine on the ventral surface from which a secreted thread may attach the animal to the substratum. Somatic ciliature severely reduced and located only on the ventral surface. As in Trochilioides there are fields of both right and left cilia. Those on the left are short and extend across the ventral surface beneath the oral apparatus. The elements of the oral basket are not reduced as in Trochilioides but consist of numerous stylets without teeth. Macronucleus large, ovoid and of the heteromeric type. There are 2 contractile vacuoles. This is mainly a marine genus but one freshwater species has been noted - Orthotrochilia (Trochilioides) sp. Patsch, 1974.
