Elongate oval, dorso-ventrally flattened bodies with an AZM extending down third to a half of the body length. 2 rows of marginal cirri do not join posteriorly, instead usually 3 long, soft caudal cirri. A typical arrangement of fronto-ventral cirri and transverse cirri present. The body soft, flexible and sometimes contractile. It may be distinguished from the related genera Oxytricha and Tachysoma by the presence of caudal cirri and absence of continuous marginal cirri. Few species have been described. Borror (1972) considers these forms to belong to the genus Oxytricha.

Descriptions

[Paroral formation]: The paroral formation is composed of three parts (PF1, PF2 and PF3) with similar kinetosomal make-up. Each part is composed of a double rows of kinetosomes. There is a set of fibres whose origin is in the paroral formation and which reach the left edge of the adoral membranelles (Groliere 1969). (ref. ID; 4695)
