Loricophrya Matthes, 1956 (ref. ID; 2013)

Class Kinetofragminophora: Subclass Suctoria: Order Suctorida: Suborder Endogenina (ref. ID; 2013)

[ref. ID; 2013]
Body of various shapes within a distinct lorica which is extended posteriorly to form a stalk-like projection for attachment purposes. There is a definite free margin to the circular aperture of the lorica through which some of the body protrudes. Capitate tentacles emerge mostly but not exclusively from the anterior surface of the body and are not arranged in fascicles. Macronucleus rounded, mode of reproduction and swarmer not yet described. The original diagnosis of the genus Lorichophrya by Matthes (1950) and list of species provided included a diverse assemblage of organisms. For this reason the diagnosis has been amended to include only those which have generic characters closely similar to those of the genotype Loricophrya parva (Shulz, 1931) Matthes, 1956. The three freshwater species described by Maskell (1886, 1887) are not considered by the present author to belong to the genus Loricophrya as suggested by Matthes (1956) since they possess true stalk which are not just extensions of the lorica and further possess tentacles arranged in definite fascicles. The genus is most easily confused with Metacineta and Urnula.
