Keronopsis

Keronopsis Penard, 1922 (ref. ID; 2014)

Class Polyhymenophora: Subclass Spirotricha: Order Hypotrichida: Suborder Stichotrichina: Family Holostichidae (ref. ID; 2014)

Synonym Kahliela Tucolesco, 1962 (ref. ID; 2014); Paraholosticha Kahl, 1932 (ref. ID; 613)

[ref. ID; 2014]
Elongated oval, dorso-ventrally flattened body with 2 midventral rows of cirri. No distinct frontal cirri, which are an extension of the midventral rows. A buccal cirrus is sometimes found at the right peristomial border. Transverse cirri and 2 rows of marginal cirri present. The dorsal surface carries a few longitudinal rows of cilia. Peristomial region often slightly narrowed and bent towards the animal's left. AZM extends a third to half the body length. Macronucleus often in many parts. Many species have been described.
Jankowski (1978) established the new genus Erionella for Keronopsis macrostoma Dragesco, 1963. According to Jankowski (1979) some other species may deserve to be in a further new genus. Indeed the type species does not have midventral cirri but does have frontal cirri. He created Diaxonella trimarginata for K. rubra in Jerka-Dziadosz and Janus (1972). Borror (1979) transferred this genus to the Urostylidae.

One row of right marginal cirri, and 1 or 2 rows of let marginal cirri; midventral cirri in typical zigzag series, 2 cirri per original oblique ciliary streak; frontal and midventral cirri not distinct, with anteriormost frontal cirri somewhat hypertrophied; AZM extended posteriorly to cell's right of frontal cirri. Descriptions

Paroral formation: In K. monilata paroral formation 1 is composed of a single row of 82 kinetosomes (on average: avg.) which extend from the anterior region of the adoral membranelle area to the proximity of the posterior end of this membranelle area, ending in a position which is somewhat more anterior than paroral formation 2. PF 1 measures 17.4 um (avg.) in length. Paroral formation 2 (PF 2) is located to the right of PF 1, from the region near the anterior part of the adoral membranelle area to the proximity of the posterior end of this membranelle area, extending beyond the posterior end of PF 1. PF 2 measures 21-25.2 um in length and it is composed of four parts: a) anterior, with a length of 6.6-7 um, with two parallel rows, each of 20-22 kinetosomes (diplostichomonad); b) another part situated posterior to segment a. It measures 4-4.3 um in length and is composed of 12-14 rows if kinetosomes arranged in such a way that one row of 3 kinetosomes alternates with a row of 2 kinetosomes; c) this segment is posterior to part of b. It has length of 3.2-3.7 um and it is composed of 14-16 rows, each possessing 2 kinetosomes. These pairs of kinetosomes are not located one behind the other, but rather, they are arranged in alternating form with the lower pair displaced, with respect to the upper pair, approximately as far as the length of one kinetosome; d) this is the most posterior segment. It measures 9-10.5 um and is composed of pairs of kinetosomes alternating with a single kinetosome, that is, forming a chain in which each pair of kinetosomes is separated by a single kinetosome. 20-22 kinetosome pairs alternate with 20-22 single kinetosomes. Beneath paroral formation 1, there is a fibre which accompanies the row of kinetosomes in its full length. This fibre, designated subparoral fibre 1 (SPF 1) relates with the kinetosomes of the formation by means of connections, each of which is found between one kinetosome and the subparoral fibre. At the base of paroral formation 2, there is a thick fibre which accompanies this formation in its full length. (ref. ID; 4695)
