Helicostomella
Helicostomella Jorgensen, 1924 (ref. ID; 3607)
Order Heterotrichida Stein, 1867: Suborder Tintinnoinea Kofoid & Campbell, 1929: Family Coxliellidae Kofoid & Campbell, 1929 (ref. ID; 3607)
[ref. ID; 3596]
Lorica elongate, tubular; oral margin with or without minute triangular teeth; bowl cylindrical in the suboral part with a number of spiral turns, inflated or gradually tapering in the posterior half; aboral region conical with an aboral horn; wall thin. (ref. ID; 3596)
Lorica fusiform, 5.0-6.5 oral diameters in length; oral margin more or less everted, with about 30 minute triangular teeth; bowl cylindrical, annulated with 5-10 spiral turns in the suboral region, slightly dilated and tapering to an aboral horn in the posterior half, its greatest transdiameter 1.05-1.20 oral diameters; aboral horn somewhat curved, often with some striae, its length 0.11-0.33 of the total length. (ref. ID; 3596)
Lorica elongated fusiform, 6.4-7.8 oral diameters in length; oral rim somewhat flaring, dentate with about 24 short teeth; bowl cylindrical with 10-22 suboral turns in the anterior one-third of the lorica, dilated slightly in the posterior half of the bowl, widest near the middle of the total length, its greatest transdiameter 1.00-1.13 oral diameters; aboral region convex conical (25-38 degrees), sometimes with a few, irregularly curved striae running into an aboral horn 0.12-0.17 of the total length in length. (ref. ID; 3607)
Comments
The deviation of length of the aboral horn is so remarkable that it becomes equal to total length of the lorica. The species differs from H. subulata (Ehrenberg) in the stouter contour and the presence of a posterior slight inflation of the bowl. (ref. ID; 3596)
Differs from Helicostomella subulata (Ehrenberg) in its shorter lorica and in an aboral bulge. (ref. ID; 3607)
Helicostomella longa Brandt (ref. ID; 4669) or (Brandt) Kofoid & Campbell (ref. ID; 3597)
Descriptions
Lorica small, bullet-shaped, its length 2.2-3.5 oral diameters, expanding very slightly near the middle; oral rim without dentation; anterior subcylindrical part 0.40-0.56 of the total length, with 2-9 annular lines; aboral region conical (38-41 degrees); aboral end usually pointed, sometimes provided with a poorly marked aboral horn; wall hyaline. (ref. ID; 3597)
This species is characterised by the presence of a small clean lorica, the aboral end of which is more acute. Anteriorly 8 spiral turns are seen. The oral margin is not uniform. The lorica is about 4.6 oral diameters in length. (ref. ID; 4669)
Comments
The species differs from the other species of Helicostomella in smaller size and stouter form. (ref. ID; 3597)
The species reported here agrees essentially with the description given by Hada (1974) and Silva (1952). But the local species is much longer than Hada's specimens (length, 50.0-52.0 um) and shorter than Silva's (1952) (83.0-87.0 um) specimens. (ref. ID; 4669)
Lorica slender, 7.0-9.8 oral diameters in length; oral rim with 24-32 flaring teeth; bowl cylindrical, wound with 5-25 spiral bands in the suboral part, tapering posteriorly to an aboral horn, its length 0.13-0.35 of the total length. (ref. ID; 3596)
Lorica elongated, slender pipette-shaped, 9.1-11.3 oral diameters in length; oral rim more or less flaring, denticulate with about 30 short teeth; bowl cylindrical in the anterior half of the lorica; aboral region conical (15-20 degrees), tapering distally into a long, somewhat oblique aboral horn with a pointed tip; suboral bands 10-20 in number, denticular, fading posteriorly, but most prominent on some one of the more anterior bands. (ref. ID; 3607)
[Resting cyst]: Cylindrical cyst as seen within lorica. (ref. ID; 4111)
Comments
The species was originally described from Kiel Bay by Ehrenberg (1833). It is one of common species in the North, Baltic, and Mediterranean Seas. A marked variation is observed in length of the aboral horn as in H. fusiformis. The species differ from H. fusiformis (Meunier) in the size of the lorica and the lack of an aboral bulge of the bowl. (ref. ID; 3596)
Differs from Helicostomella edentata (Faure-Fremiet) in presence of dentation of the oral margin and from H. kiliensis (Laackmann) in more gradually contraction of the aboral region. (ref. ID; 3607)
