Order Euplotida: Family Euplotidae (ref. ID; 7354)

[ref. ID; 7354]
Members of the genus Euplotoides n. g., formerly in the genus Euplotes, typically occur in freshwater, but one, Euplotoides woodruffi, has been isolated from both freshwater an low salinity estuaries. The nine FVC are related morphogenetically as if the "missing cirrus" appears to be VI/3 of Euplotes charon. The dorsal argyrome is of a double pattern. We designate here the type species to be Euplotoides patella (Muller, 1773) n. comb. There are 10 additional species: E. aediculatus (Pierson, 1943) n. comb., E. agamalievi (Aliev, 1987) n. comb., E. amieti (Dragesco, 1970) n. comb., E. daidaleos (Diller and Kounaris, 1966) n. comb., E. dogieli (Agamaliev, 1967) n. comb., E. eurystomus (Wrzesniowski, 1870) n. comb., E. octocarinatus (Carter, 1972) n. comb., E. palustris (Hagen, 1980) n. comb., E. plumipes (Stokes, 1884) n. comb., and E. woodruffi (Gaw, 1939) n. comb. The obligate bacterial endosymbiont omicron now designated Polynucleobacter necessarius (Heckmann and Schmidt 1987) has been found in all species of the genus except E. amieti and E. dogieli, species that have not been studied. We believe that endosymbionts similar to omicron will be found to be essential in all species of Euplotoides. Algal endosymbionts are found in at least one species, E. octocarinatus appears to differ in some of its enzymes from the rest of the genus based upon electrophoresis (Schlegel et al. 1988). (ref.
