Dendrosoma

Dendrosoma Ehrenberg, 1838 (ref. ID; 2013)

Class Kinetofragminophora: Subclass Suctoria: Order Suctorida: Suborder Endogenina (ref. ID; 2013)

[ref. ID; 2013]
Large (1-2.25 mm high) irregularly spreading branched dendritic body with clusters of capitate tentacles located at ends of branches. Neither stalk nor lorica present although it has a tendency to collect a covering of adherent sand grains and plant detritus. A large proportion of the body is attached directly to submerged vegetation and/or invertebrate animals over which it spreads and branches giving rise to erect branched arms at intervals. There are several contractile vacuoles. The macronucleus is band-like and branched with numerous micronuclei. Reproduction is by endogenous budding and the exogenous buds often illustrated were shown by Hickson and Wadsworth (1909) to be those of the epizooic suctorian Urnula. The genus is most easily confused with Dendrosomides which is erect with a stalk and with Gorgonosoma which is erect but without a stalk.
