Shape ovoid to pyriform, small (20-40 um long). Body uniformly ciliated, cilia in pairs arranged in kineties which slightly curve down the body. There is an anterior tuft of cilia in certain species. The oral aperture is in a prominent shallow groove which occupies the anterior third of the cell. Oral ciliature consists of a haplokinety on the right (paroral ciliature) in 2 segments and 4 small adoral organelles forming a membranelle on the left. Some species construct gelatinous tubes which they may leave. Macronucleus spherical and centrally positioned, micronucleus enclosed within outer macronuclear envelope. Contractile vacuole situated in posterior body third connected to a permanent, posteriorly directed tubular canal several microns long.
