Cryptophrya Jankowski, 1973 (ref. ID; 2013)

Class Kinetofragminophora: Subclass Suctoria: Order Suctorida: Suborder Endogenina (ref. ID; 2013)

[ref. ID; 2013]
Body elongate conical shape mounted on a short, narrow but distinct stalk. The entire body and stalk surrounded by a distinct balloon-like lorica which tends to become covered in sand grains and other debris. Pointed tentacles emerge from all over the anterior end of the body and protrude through the lorica. The macronucleus is ovoid and reproduction is by simple endogenous budding. The genus was originally described by Swarczewsky (1928) as Discophrya obtecta found growing on freshwater gammarid crustaceans in Lake Baikal. More recently Jankowski (1973) thought the animal sufficiently different to erect it as a new single species genus.
