Shape elongate reniform to pyriform, highly metabolic with very short left anterior rostrum bearing an apical oval oral aperture. On the right of the aperture there is a C-shaped double row of cilia (paroral cilia) and there are about 12 groups of cilia of the left (adoral cilia). Body cilia uniform, arranged in longitudinal/oblique rows of cilia. At the posterior end of the body there are 2 to 25 curious tube-like structures. Contractile vacuole posterior. Macronucleus rounded, centrally placed, micronucleus within outer macronuclear membrane. Division takes place in cysts. Most easily confused with Platyophrya which does not have the posterior tubes.
